The last post in my little blogging series about really hyped books. These are the ones that I’ve given into the temptation to buy, but haven’t actually got round to reading. A good mix of classics and modern books, but all suffering a little under their own fame – because when a book has such a fearsome reputation how can it possibly live up to it?
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
I think most of my desire comes from the Friends episode where Joey reads. Any book that evokes a strong enough emotion to need to be put in the freezer must be good.
2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
I’m actually a little scared to read this as I have placed such high expectations on it. I’m saving it for when I’ve got enough time to read it cover to cover in a matter of days as I imagine that once I start I won’t be able to put it down.
3. 1984 by George Orwell
I’m actually a little ashamed of myself for admitting I haven’t read this. I loved Animal Farm so I have great hopes for this.
4. Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham
When this book first came out it was absolutely everywhere. But I’d never really found Lena Denham that entertaining so I kind of avoided it. But once I saw Caitlin Moran had endorsed it I had to read it.
5. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Such an absolute classic and I still haven’t read it. I’ve had a copy on my shelf for years but I just can’t really imagine myself enjoying it. Not that I really know anything about it. But one day I will pick it up and hopefully it will prove me completely wrong.

read gone girl for sure! it was quite good in my opinion, and i’m hooked on thriller type novels now too!
the girl on the train is another one i read after gone girl (reviewed it on my blog) they were both good, but i think gone girl wins between the two!!

They are both good, but i guess you cant really compare them. I’d recommend them both though!!

I’m so scared to read Gone Girl as well! I’ve just heard so much about it. I also have yet to read 1984, but it’s definitely one I want to read soon.

I think the longer I leave Gone Girl the more I overhype it in my mind too! One day it’ll have to be done though. Or maybe you could read it first so I know whether it does live up to the hype…

I personally don’t think Gone Girl and Not that kind of Girl live up to their hype. I have to admit that I’ve watched (and disliked) the Gone girl movie before trying to read the book though. I don’t even know why but I couldn’t seem to get into both – so predictable and kind of boring

Oh my gosh I have so much to say!
Personally, I think Gone Girl, 1984, and Huck Finn all live massively up to their hype. I’ve never read Animal Farm but I really loved 1984’s writing style, and it’s pretty short as well so it’s easier to read than many classics.
Gone Girl, well, don’t read that at night! I couldn’t put it down, but it literally freaked me out. It was amazing. Half of my brain focused on how great the story was, but the other half actively noticed the incredible writing.
Huck Finn is a really, really interesting recollection of the American South. With that said, it’s also fairly hard to read at points just because of Twain’s writing style. I enjoy his writing a lot, but it’s very slow going for me.

I don’t do well with scary things so might have to put Gone Girl off until I can read it around people.
And you should definitely read Animal Farm, you can have it finished in a day and it’s such an interesting read. Especially if you already like George Orwell.
Although I have to say describing Huck Finn as slow going really puts me off it! I get so impatient with books. But one day I will read it. One day……
